The solution? Just remove the app and re install if from the AppStore. That's it. you can login back and those images in your messenger can be viewed again.

I thought my internet connection was slow or not working.

and I guess this only happens to iOs users. Android messenger users are not affected by this

Maybe an app update causes the issues. I have no idea about android users.
